I need to go from the smart jack to a router at the other end of a building. I wired it as a T-1 crossover 1 to 4 and 2 to 5 .Is that correct or should it be 1to 1 2 to 2 etc. Thanks Pat

Typically, from the NIU to the router is straight through.

There are variants with CPE equipment. Everything I extended demarcs for, were straight through cabling.

For reference at smart jack:
Pins 1 & 2 is telco transmit or CPE receive
Pins 4 & 5 is telco receive or CPE transmit

When you connect "Smart" Devices, i.e. devices that generate a T-1 signal, you connect transmit to receive (1-4, 2-5, 4-1, 5-2).

When you connect a Smart device to a "Dumb" device, i.e. a device that does NOT generate its own T-1 signal (like a DSX bay or RJ-48X or smart jack) you connect it straight through (1-1, 2-2 4-4, 5-5).

When you connect a dumb device to a dumb device, you connect it straight through.
