Hey Jeff (or others),

I am attempting to connect to my Cisco 2509 Router through the Console port. Connected to WinXpHome HyperTerminal.

I went from Rj-45 (ed!) and attached on a DB-9 to conenct to COM1 serial. (used a customizable db-9 addon from radioshack with pinout from cisco.com)

I used 9600 Baud:
1 stop bit:
No flow control:
No parity:

When I connect I get garble, I just ordered a genuine cisco console cable, in case that's the problem, should be in Wednesday.

Any ideas?

Does your pinout still require a roll over cable, or is that taken into account? Assuming your cable is correct, try all possibly baud rates. The default is 9600, but who knows what it may have been changed to.

I'm not sure. It is Cisco Standard that is listed in the pamphlet, and it tells to use a roll-over cable. However, with a roll-over cable, I get a blank HyperTerm. With a straight-through cable, I get jibberish.

I will try baud rates tomorrow. Thanks!

Yep 9600-8-n-1-n was what I was using when I got garble. Only got the garble with straight-through, roll-over cable provided nice blank screen.

Roll over is what you want to use. A trick I use when I have to make them is make one side B like normal. Then make the other side B but flip the cable around and put the plug on. The brown wire would be on your left.
It is possible to change the baud rate but I am not sure why it would be done. I think that only would be needed with the aux port, for a remote modem to dial in.

It's generally isn't necessary to change the buad rate, but people do it anyways. We'll have students do that once in awhile. It isn't always done intentially, sometimes they just screw up when they change the config register.

Hmm. Wierd. I think I'm going to have to wait it out for the genuine cable, nothing seems to be working smile

I would try changing your buad rate, cycle the power on the router, and try ctrl-break. Give that a shot for each buad rate. And definately use the roll over cable if that's what it says to use for the adapter that you have. I'd start at the higher buad rates as well. If someone changed it from default, I doubt they would have gone with a slower rate.

Well I now have no console cable, but as soon as the new Cisco Certified one gets in, I will try your suggestions.

What does CNTRL+Break do?
