How about a VOIP General catagory?
Anyway, I am looking to get a VOIP line at home on a cable modem. I heard that my RCA modem may not be the best modem to have for that. Any suggestions? Also what about the ATA adapters? I am looking at the Sipura SPA-2000 but the Grandstream looks good too. Any input? What about plans? there seem to be alot of them out there, anyone got nay input to some real winners? Losers?

Well first I would do a google for your area, as google has a local search now. I have vonage at my home and I am not impressed with it at all, half the time it's so bad I can't hear or be heard.

DTMF: Who do you have as a backbone, Qwest or Comcast for your vonage?

That is a drag, you need a good broadband connection or it can be painfull. Any other Highspeed choices available to you?
Here all the cable companies and providers are providing VoIP services so their networks support QOS and prioritize VoIP traffic.

The Sipura SPA-2000 is the same one as Linksys that Vonage uses. See my positive disconnect note https://www.sundance-communications.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/000827.html

That's the kicker, comcast offers to bring you a line but really aren't in a hurry to bump it up for a third parties IP line. They are about to loose a customer.

billflippen, once you choose a voip provider they should set you up with every thing you need, (new modem, ATA) You may have options to buy or lease to buy. Some companies want a year lease then after that its yours.

Keep that POTS line, or make sure you have the 911 access with only your voip.

Some problems I have ran into are:
-fax machines can not use lines
-Alarm systems can not use lines
-some companies can not offer 911
-some charge more to keep your old number
-trunk to trunk conference calls do not release (unsupervised conferece)

Messing with a Sipura SPA2100 now!

Good Luck!!

If all else fails, use a BFH.

well, I opened it as two fold. New catagory, then equipment.
I am asking about equipment since the renting is not always a good deal.

I think to be fair there should be a meeting to discuss the possibility of another catagory. Then a formal vote, then another meeting to discuss the outcome of the vote. then the decision should be sent to the "higher ups" who will reject it immediately and request more background checks and meetings. And finally resumit it back to the "higher ups" who then reword it to allow a catagory no one even cares about.

I have been using AT&T callVantage for the past 12 months with no problems. 99% of the time the distance end does not know I am using VoIP, they all think I am right next door because the calls are so clear. The calling plans are not bad, I have the unlimited local and LD plane 29.95/Month. https://www.usa.att.com/callvantage/index.jsp?soac=64528
