What do you use to seal the end of a pole riser that goes underground and then up out of the slab in the building? Since the end of the pipe in the building is lower than the top of the pipe out on the pole, when the pipe fills with water it flows out all over the telecom room floor.

I have been looking at a 3M #4416 duch seal kit but it seems to be a bit pricy and maybe overkill. This is only 2" pipe and I have seen Verizon use some 2 part stuff that looks like foam sealant. Probably stuff something down around the cable and pour it in.

You could probably do that with the expandable foam used for insulation. I just use plain old fire duct and wrap it with vinyl tape, I've never had a problem.

Hal, that's the expanding pedestal sealant that was used to fill in the bottom of a pedestal to keep snakes and ants out or to seal conduits. It's part #PR-868, made by Senior Industries. I don't know if they are still around, or at least if they are operating under that same name.

It's basically expanding foam like Bill said, but since it's two parts, it has a longer shelf life. Touch-n-Foam is probably the most economical solution, but it can't be left exposed to sunlight or it will turn orange, then brown, then start to fall apart.

That's where the vinyl tape comes in. The duct seal (monkey crap) or fire duct, what ever you call it will also dry out. The tape will keep it pliable and protect it from UV.

Hal,

D) All of the above. clap

The foam is easy to penetrate if more cables are required.

Just one more thing, if you do use the fire stop pliable putty, put some wax paper around it before you put on the vinyl tape, much easier to get back into.

Actually this is not ours, it's the cable company's existing 1/2 or 5/8" hardline into the building. We were there and customer complained about the water with all the rain we have been having. Told them we would take care of it, much easier than trying to explain to Cablevision and getting them to do it. :bang:

Usually when this is our cable either water is not an issue or Verizon will seal the end out on the pole.

I decided to go with the 3M duct seal kit. Upon a closer look I see it has several pouches of sealant and a supply of packing so it's good for several jobs which makes the price reasonable after all. Customer is gonna pay anyway so...

Very good topic, Hal. A lot of people never even think of this stuff.
