Went on a service call for a system completely down. Found the power supply blown and this little gem (the #6 ground wire from Verizon's terminal to the building frame above). This is obviously due to a sustained power cross with the cable sheath, but the Verizon 'tech' who came out insisted that it was just due to a power surge. Note that the gray insulation is completely melted off and charred. To make matters worse, this marvel of knowledge fixed it by replacing it with a piece of #10 for a 100 pair BET.

I assume you have Verizon on speed dial for the next "surge".

Yikes. Two stupid questions:

1-Did any of the protectors melt down?

2-Did the rocket scientist make any effort to determine if the actual fault had been found, or will this happen again in the next high wind?

Edit: The first question was stupid - if the foreign voltage was on the sheath, the protectors never had to function. I haven't had enough coffee yet.

I'll make a bet that they lost the neutral for the incoming power and the telco ground was really a ground loop waiting for current.

I had a customer a while back get hit by lightning. There were burns on the system, there was a fire in the building, and all equipment in the area was ruined....they still did not believe the damage to the telephone system was from the lightning.....

I have seen similar to this in the past and every time it was 7,200 volts that came down on the tel. cable and energized it, due to a car accident. the last one I had a Vodavi DHS in and I always use ITWLINX secondary lightning Protection. the customer told me fire was coming out of the two fuzes (SCP-9F). It melted the corner of the KSU cover. My tech took the lightning protection out and bridge clipped it and the system came up and was not hurt. I was at that site a year ago and the same system is still there.
