Hi...

Curious what the going rate is to do a port from one carrier to another. NEW Carrier will be duplicating existing infrastructure so it should almost be plug and play. I got a quote for vendor support that just seems really high for almost no work.

I don't think there is a set "rate" that CLECs charge for porting numbers and any other related tasks needed to establish new service.

Porting numbers is easy between two existing service providers, but that is not what you appear to be doing. Switching service providers is a completely different subject with a frequent misnomer of "porting".

It is important to remember that just because there is little or no work that needs to be done on your end, the service provider needs to equip and program the circuit in their switch, provision and install the circuit and more than likely, pay the incumbent service provider to deliver it to your premises.

There are a LOT of steps and many hands must touch one of these orders. In many cases, the new service provider's switch may even be in another state.

You may be in Cleveland and choose to use Global Crossing as your service provider. Let's say that their nearest switch is located in Pittsburgh. They then must pay Verizon to originate the circuit, someone to carry it to Cleveland, then they have to pay at&t to deliver it to you. Of course, this is an extreme example. It is just to demonstrate that there are many costs behind the scenes to establish service.

Sometimes, depending upon the contract term, installation fees may be negotiated or waived entirely. It surely doesn't hurt to ask.

Thank you for everyone's input...sorry if I wasn't clear...the carrier isn't charging anything. That was part of our agreement if we signed with them. My phone system (Avaya Definity) maintenance company went out of business. I called another business partner so that I could have support here IF something needs to be changed on the switch that I don't have the knowledge or permission to do with my log-on. He "shouldn't" have to do anything if the phone carrier did everything correct. I've done this before and the process using takes about 15 minutes. I'm just curious what people are charging to be on site during the cut-over.

I charge standard Svc and hourly rates same as any other service call

It doesn't matter what a tech is doing while onsite.....the company that employs him still has to pay him to get there and to be there the whole time as well as drive to his next ticket.

So it costs that company the same no matter what the tech is actually doing.......and....if you run into a problem it will be nice to have him on site where you need him.

And...just out of curiosity...who was the vendor that went out of business??.....if you are not happy with your new vendor i am sure someone here can help or at least refer you to another bp.

Understood...I didn't want to put an amount in as it might bias answers but $850 seems a bit high given what they will need to do. If they did T&M billing then fine...you get your hourly rate but a flat fee of that amount for this seems a bit absurd. No?
