Regulators in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are looking into an allegation that FairPoint Communications faked its readiness to take over the region's dominant phone network from Verizon during a review by a consultant to the states,

My only question is that if these states revoke Fairpoint's license to operate these networks, who will do the job? It isn't like they can run by themselves and I'm sure that Verizon isn't coming back.

I detect 3 states that are going levy serious fines that will drive the 'last lec hope' out of business! frown John C.

AT&T could always make a run at ME, NH & VT if Fairpoint decides to fold.

"John, "Last LEC hope?"

Wild Imagination helps. Like the last Local Exchange Carrier that is going to use copper and be held to the 'old rules'. frown John C.

There are many LEC'S in the northeast who will jump in to fill the void.

The question is which one?

Most of the LECS (other than Verizon and Fairpoint) here in New England are fairly small operations. I just don't know if any of them would be able to make the jump from being an ILEC to an RBOC.

Personally, I only see "The New at&t" as being a viable contender since that territory was built under Bell System standards. They would be a shoe-in in my opinion, but I don't see them being too quick to blow a lot of money these days.

Yesterday, Fairpoint met with officials from Maine, New Hampshire & Vermont to discuss the ongoing service problems. Here is what one newspaper reported.

(Not covered by the report......The city of Montpelier VT was isolated yesterday morning when a failed clock card caused SS7 problems for the 5E in the Central Office).
