A small motel customer is experiencing phantom rings to several (~10%) rooms. The extensions and the hours they ring seem to be fairly random. All incoming calls ring at the front desk and the calls don't seem to originate from pranksters within the motel either. The extensions affected are scattered on different blades and bays of the PBX and areas of the motel. Resetting the bays haven't seemed to fix the problem. No one seems to know the MAINT1 pswd so I can't view alarms that way, just with *32 and that isn't helpful. Anyone have any words of wisdom? Oh, Happy New Year.

So, another tech said that the ONS Line Cards that have blue writing on them are older and if they have been exposed to excessive heat sometimes cause phantom rings. Anyone ever heard of that?

Yeah, they eventually start going south, and not just the bons. Dripping water on exposed cable can also cause freaky things.

Rubbish (regarding that they are older and are more likely to go bad.) The blue ONS cards are BONS. They are called out in form 4 as to how many you may have. You can replace BONS with plain ONS, but you can't add more BONS cards unless you buy the licensing from Mitel.

When the phantom call occurs, what is the answering station hearing? Has anyone tried to transfer the call to the attendant? Doing so will reveal the source of the phantom caller.

Is there a Voice Mail system connected to the Mitel? If there is, you might want to see what the display says when the phantom calls occur.

I've had cards with bad ports that the relay will chatter and act like pulse dialing. If it gets dial tone and then dials a valid number it rings that extension. Sometimes you can just watch the cards and see the LED flicker.

Happy New Year!

You could add a new LDN to the console, program form 19 "Station Illegal Number Routing", and "Station Vacant Number Routing" to the new LDN and see if it shows up there. Chances are it will if it's calling random numbers. If it's only calling room numbers well, you have another problem!

Western's got the best reply. The defective card is 'chattering' all day long. Most of the time it's dialing invalid numbers, but every now and then, it dials a valid number.
When the invalid/vacant call rings to the new LDN (or any other display phone)the ext displayed is the faulty one.

Hey Fred, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The chattering relay is a well known problem to both BONS and ONS cards alike.

ABSOLUTELY.
The repair business is a big fan of 'relay chatter'
