Im not sure where to put this, so I will add it here.
I am looking for a phone company that will all me to select a specific number. I KNOW for a fact that the number I need is free to use, so what or who do I need to contact? Either Regular or VOP service will do. Thanks!

HOW do you know that the number that you want to use is not in use?
Who do you need to contact? Obviously the service provider of your choice. They will have the last word as to whether the number is available.

Is it a toll free number? If so, every provider should be able to help as long as it is not taken.

The first thing you should do is contact the incumbent "owner" of the number you are trying to secure. This is determined by the area code and first three digits of the number. Number portability it pretty much available, but it's usually easiest to start with the service provider that may currently have the number in their posession. I usually go to www.NANPA.org to download current lists of providers based upon numbers (just look for NXX listings). If you want to contact me via e-mail, I can look it up for you to save you some time. Once you have this information, contact that carrier and see what they can do for you. One thing to remember, if it's currently owned by a cellular or PCS carrier, they aren't going to want to do much except to sign you up for an account with them. Also, remember that just because a number isn't in service doesn't mean it's not owned or reserved by someone. Very frequently, large blocks of numbers are reserved for future use by businesses. They can pay a small fee to keep numbers that follow in their current range reserved, and getting them to release just one of them will probably be impossible. ------------------ Ed --------- How come there's always enough time to go back and fix it a second time?

I like the NANPA.ORG site---but the NANPA.COM site is what you mean.

Duh. I can't ever keep the dot whatever straight. I just use desktop shortcuts. I was able to help them off-line for now though.
And now my famous signature once again expains my usual mindset:

Does anyone know how long a business number ages for?Usually until the number of calls to it drop below a certain level. Depending on who had it before this could take a long time, especially if they owed money. -Hal

In our area (DC), residential numbers are usually kept out of service no more than 90 days. The phone company charges a fee for each additional 90 days you want it unused.
For business numbers, the same applies for non-primary numbers (for example, numbers in hunt). Primary numbers are kept out of service for one year.
