The phone jack in the wall had a bad wire. After putting in a new phone jack, the phone is dead. Plugged phone directly into the port in the phone system and it is still dead. All other functions on the system work.

Can a port be shorted out? Can it be reset easily? This phone system is old.

Thank you.

If you have a spare port in your control unit
Move the extension I.E. 10 to 16 and see if that works.
If not you may want to bring a local service company.

When you replaced the jack, you may have shorted the wires together. To reset the port you will need to power off the system and turn it back on after about 15 seconds.
Just be sure that it has a good battery or you will lose the programming.

Perhaps the initial problem was a bad port to start with?

Make sure you are using a 4 conductor line cord for your testing.

The procedure would be to take a known-good phone and plug it directly into the port, with the proper line cord of course. If that shows that the port is not working, shut the system down and power it back up. If the port now works with the test phone you know the data/power pair (pins 3&6) is or was shorted somewhere in the premises wiring or the jack. Check your wiring, but it certainly is posible that the short occurred while changing the jack and is no longer there. I have also seem the phones themselves cause the same problem.

I have a number of bad ports on a variety of boards. I don't know what happens, but punching down to a working port normally fixes the issue. Just keep a note of your bad ports so you don't use them again.
