I have seen them go bad on an ACTU1A before. I had to replaced one. Even the AMDS modem wasn't working at that location. At least the NIC is replaceable on the ACTU1A, not on the 2A.
I would check the basic stuff, like the cord you are using, the link lights on the NICs, the laptop connection by plugging into something else. My laptop auto senses polarity, so while a cross-over cable is correct, you may be able to try a regular cable, depending on your laptop (the CIX won't auto convert). Lastly I would take a flashlight and see if any pins are bent in the connector.
Beyaond that, not sure what to tell you. If there is a modem equiped you may be able to dial in. If the system has analog ports, you can connect to one with a modem connection directly.

On the older CTX's if this happened you could get into programing via a phone and then it would clear the problem... might try that.

I second what Steve said, go onsite and try getting into programming through a phone. As soon as you enter a program number the system may reset. After it comes back up you should be able to get in with your laptop. If it doesn't reset, you probably have a bad NIC.

Another thing you can try is disable the NIC card on your laptop from the control panel and then enable it. This works for my laptop when I have this problem.

You need to setup a connection "RemoteCTX1" to connect through the modem. Have you verified that the IP address of the phone system is correct?

Maybe I am having a senior moment but it still says cannot find number in phone book. Where is the phone book? I have the number listed there.

Verify the dial-up connection (RemoteCTX1) is created and named correctly.
If the dial-up connection, RemoteCTX1, is created under Network and Dial-Up Connections and you continue to get this error, delete and recreate. This is from Toshiba FYI
