Ha! Where was that information when I was trying to do that years ago. The key is in step 4.1, configuring the modem.

Thing is I can't remember why I was trying to do it though because I never had a problem with a US Robotics Sportster on my end connecting to the ACS built-in modem. That was the recommended way and the only way that worked.
