Is there any standard whether these should be male or female for particular uses? Or is it just a matter of what ends are on the cables youre using?

Jim Doesn't make sense to have a standard connector and then have to add a gender changer. If you have the Amphenol tool and a reel of 25 pr...knock yourself out. Save $$$ that way and you can have the exact length you need.
