Do you get anything when you plug in the LAN cable? Do you have the PDF file for LAN access to the Partner Messaging? I can send you one if you need.

I got a link on the LAN card when using the cross over cable, and I got a link on the switch when using a normal LAN cable; if that is what you're asking. I can't ping 10.0.0.42 (which is the default IP that is stated in the documentation). Tried opening the PARTNER Messaging Adminsitration program, and typing in 10.0.0.42, it doesn't find the unit (can't contact).
I've tried all sorts of configs of the LAN card on the laptop from just entering an IP to subnets, to gatewats (10.0.0.1 and the actual 10.0.0.42). The documentation isn't clear of how to set my machine IP settings for that.
It states that I should use the RS232 cable to program in the LAN settings (which is different then 10.0.0.x) for my network and initial config anyways. The VM won't respond to that either.
Eric

I will try to track down the CD somewhere. I have only had to connect with a few of them in the past, and I have never logged in with the RS-232 to change any settings. I have used the default settings and changed everything that needed to be changed on the LAN card. Do you have onboard LAN on your laptop or a PC card? I don't use my on board LAN. I use a seperate PC card LAN card and it seems to work fine. Leave it to Avaya to make it extra difficult to do something.

You should be able to log into it through RS 232 by using std 4 pair cable and 355Af adapter and RS 232/DB 9 cable using 19200,8,none,1 and the flow control should be set for none.If you still have problem then you have a deffective VM. By the way I got a punch of these modules have bad LAN and RS232 ports but not in the same time usually it is either or.

Z-Man, Thanks man, but I already have the CD. ![[Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]](https://www.sundance-communications.com/forum/smile.gif) On two laptops, they are PCMCIA cards (no internal). On another laptop, it was an internal only. Yep, I'm starting to learn the Avaya 'way of things'. Samh, Yep. That's exactly the RS-232 cable I'm using. I even connected to a router to ensure the cable still worked. A technician named Scott was kind enough to fax me the pinouts of the RS232 cable, "just in case". It's the same. So now it's decided, I suppose, that it's a defective unit. The reason I'm fighting so much to get the LAN working on this thing is because of the backup of the entire module over the network (not just the settings), and also I do not want to type out all 80+ last names of the voice mail boxes I'm setting up. Plus, we cycle so many employees ... You get the idea. ![[Linked Image from sundance-communications.com]](https://www.sundance-communications.com/forum/smile.gif) Thanks guys! I'll contact Craig for a replacement at this time. Regards, Eric

I agree with you ,I will not program that amount of mailboxes without the LAN port and The messaging adminstration software.I think that you have a deffective unit.by the way did you tried different 355AF adapter with the RS 232 cable.just a thought.
Good Luck

samh,
Yes. I have two RS232 cables and adapters and tried both. I tried them both on the routers we have and they worked fine.
Craig is sending me another unit. Thanks for your help!

Your should try your serial cable on the smdr port to see if it is right and works. I have NEVER seen the avaya 355AF adapter work on anything except at&t/lucent/avaya equipment. If it worked on a router I doubt it will work on the phone equipment. it is a propritery adapter.

I agree that a 355 will not work on a router. Avaya flips TX & RX, use this pinout Mod Plug to 9 DB = To Avaya 355AF adapter to DB 9 1 blue to 9 2 orange to 1, 6, 8 3 black to 4 4 red to 5 5 green to 2 6 yellow to 3 7 brown not used 8 white not used
Also you can connect to the RMD on board modem at 9600 instead of using the RS232 port to change your IP settings. The default direct speed was 38.4 not 19.2 for the direct connect. Did you set your IP to 10.0.0.43 and connect to 42 using a cross over cable? Your PC and Merlin Mess have to be in the same IP Domain.
