First… I’m not a chemical engineer but I know when guys I race with try to dope their fuel (cheat) by adding methanol to their race gas, a mixing agent has to be added to allow for the schtuff to create a humongous mixture. In other words methanol and gas will separate unless properly mixed and a correct amount of a mixing agent is used. Maybe acetone will mix okay, dun-no fir shor… but I think it would act a lot like the methanol in that regard.

Second… telman3756497 is absolutely correct when stating that acetone would increase combustion efficiency. That in itself sounds like a great thing when considering the price of gasoline. You’d THINK that getting a complete and 100% burn out of each and every compression cycle would be a good thing when it comes to the cost of the gas you’re burning. One problem with that though… With the acetone you’re creating an extremely lean condition in the engine. In racing we say “lean is mean” and when tuning a race engine the trick is to get it as lean as possible without burning it up. What it means to go “too lean” either with too small jetting (fuel delivery) or too much advanced timing or in this case by adding a chemical agent, is that too much fuel is burnt during the combustion cycle… Gasoline engines DEPEND on there being some unspent fuel to help cool the combustion chamber. I’ve seen spark plugs with the ends completely disintegrated off due to the heat of a lean condition… exhaust valves MELTED due to running lean… and like Merritt has said twice now, a hole can be burnt strait through the top of pistons if you have an engine that’s too lean. These were all results of pretty small errors in tuning the engine.

I’d think for all ya’ll driving a chit-load of miles in service vans and trucks you could look at fuel cost saving methods like a LP (liquid propane) convert or even a computer performance upgrade such as a Super Chip (or other manufacture) modification.

Thanks,
Bryan

Back i the early 70's i worked for BASF We had
a guy who raced go carts . in the lab we would
doctor his gas with proplene oxide to increase
octane from 97 to about 120 it worked great, till
this guy added to much on his own.made one lap
and blew the head off that b&s engine.

Is anyone else trying this acetone additive except for me? If so do you notice any difference? I think it's great! I am enjoying my windshield time now. Hakoona Matata.

I am going to try it this weekend and record my mileage differences. Figure it's going to take at least 3 tanks to get an accurate reading...About $750 of gas I'd guess. mad

I drive a Tahoe when I need a truck and Taurus when running service/sales. The Tahoe gets 16-17 MPG during the day and 17-18 at night. Those Chevy V8s love cooler air.

Interesting. Like I said above, I went from 17 to 19 mpg. Im going to go through a couple more tanks (40 gal ea.) and then go from 2.0 oz per 10 gal to 2.5 oz per 10 gal and see if it gets better or worse.

From what I have read the recommended mix is 2-3 ounces per 10 gallons of gas. I'll try it in the Tahoe to see if I can pick up a couple of MPG. Be kinda cool if I could do the acetone, free flow air cleaner and flowmaster exhaust and see what additional MPG I could get.

This may have been mentioned and I missed it. Where can I buy acetone? Are there variations? Just plain ole acetone?

acetone can be purchased at automotive and hardware stores.
CAUTION acetone vapors are harmful and very explosive, [Linked Image from img.photobucket.com] acetone is used for cleaning but is very distructive to most plastics

Don't let it drip on the paint. You don't have to worry about vapors if you are using it outside and at this low volume and short duration.

I bought a gallon of acetone, a measuring cup and a transmission fluid funnel (long snoot). I put the funnel in the tank after I fill up and pour in 2 oz per 10 gal.

This is the same stuff that is in nail polish remover. You will get the same odor.

Like Metel said, it is flammable. Don't smoke anything while using it.
