OK here it is:
The Norstar uses INTERCOM 0# to page. INTERCOM 0# activates the Contact Closure Page Port. The signal is sent thru to a BOGEN PCM2000 page processor. Everything is connected thru the PCM 2000. (it is set up properly. you can see how at www.bogen.com.)

It isnt tapped thru a speaker or set or anything its all done conventionally. (this is a 70v paging system.)

What I dont understand is... It worked before. No one changed a thing. Now it is all funny sounding.

[i wonder if it is the 200 bottles (yes literally) of liquid pine sol in the closet???]

Are you sure that someone( cleaner or office staff ) haven't inadvertently screwed with settings/switches on the public adress hardware(page processor)???.

all of the hardware has metal and plastic covers on them protecting the switches and buttons and lights and etc.all of the cables are in raceways with small 1/4 in. tubes that go directly to the unit to protect the cords even more.

Have you connected your buttset to the page output off the KSU? Does it sound good there while it is disconnected from the amp?

Sounds to me like there was a feature code for paging programmed under one of the intercom keys but the keycap was never replaced to say"page".If the keys have again been reprogrammed to give 2 intercom keys -this could cause your problem
Reason I say this is feature 61,62 ,63 are paging access codes and 0 selects all zones in either internal, external or combined paging.
To prove it try this
FEATURE 630
MAKE ANNOUNCEMENT
If all is OK it means there was a paging code programmed under the intercom key,but no longer.
I have never heard of using intercom 0# to access paging , I thought you fella's lifted the handset(intercom) and dialled 0 to access the system operator

all external paging makes the same noise no matter what you do to access it thru the system.

if you read the previous, yes i have connected to the amp directly and it works great.

If you're talking about a norstar and using "Intercom 0#" to page, then either:

1. You have your paging equipment connected to a set that is the target of a direct-dial at DN 0

2. You have your paging equipment connected to an FXO (Analog CO) line port, and the line is in a line pool or routing code that is located at "0",

3. You have your paging equipment connected to the actual "page" port, but your phones are mislabelled and "Intercom" is really a button for F63 (in which case the 0 would make sense, F63+0 = page all zones + external).

or....

4. You don't have a norstar system. (but then you wouldn't be using M7310 phones, now would you..)

Furthermore.................

1. Page tones do not come through the speakers (at least not from the KSU) unless your paging equipment is producing it.

2. You can't set the length of a page tone on a norstar system. Just ON or OFF.

3. The page tone on norstar systems doesn't sound like a squeal. It's an MF tone that you can hear by doing F905 and doing the "Speaker test".

Actually.. now that i think about it. You can't program "F63" onto a key, only "F63X" or "F60" (which would require 30, not just 0 after pressing). *shrug*

I hope somebody figures this out, it is getting very interesting.

Phone guys would make good detectives, only I wouldn't trust some of them to carry a gun.

Kristopher, what system do you have? A CICS or older 824 etc. would have only one page port. You said it was connected to A paging port.

What system and what pair of what block is the paging connected to please?

I wonder if he's just getting feedback from all the speakers and sets around him

The key is probably mislabeled as intercom when in reality its a page button F60 and then you have to press 0 for all zones
