VMI = Voice Mail Interface. (Not made anymore, but available in the refurb market.)
It looks and acts like an ATA, but it will provide a DTMF tone to the analog port when the remote party disconnects. It was designed to connect 3rd party analog voice mails systems to the Norstar.

I have a VMI I would be happy to sell, but the cost would be way, way more than A CPC-1 from Viking.

You have six ports going into the conference bridge, and yes you would need a CPC-1 for each port that has a hang up problem.
The VMI box is not cheap and it has two digital ports in, two analog ports out. While it would work, it is still a more expensive option. Kinda like putting a carburetor plated with gold on your old Chevy and never opening the hood. Sure but why?
