About the only time I have encountered this is when customers connect their own MOH device and plug a phone plug into the center hole of an RCA jack. Being as how you have been in the radio business, I doubt that is what you are doing. Usually, distortion comes from over-driving the music input (i.e: turning the volume up too high).
Anyway, there's really nothing else to it. I got out the manual and here are the music source specifications if they will be of any help to you:
1. Use an EIAJ RC-6701A plug (two conductor), 3.5mm in diameter;
2. Input impedance: 8 ohms;
3. Maximum cable lentgh (18-22 gauge): Under 10 meters (33 feet).
In system programming, 111 is where the music source gets selected. Do you think it's possible that the installer disabled the music on hold function? If it has been, you may just be hearing bleed-through. Just a guess.

I too have a MOH problem with a KX-TA624 and in searchingit out, found this thread. I've tried all the cable suggestions also and the problem persists. Here's the thing, though: The signal is making it to the KSU because it comes through loud and clear on the proprietary phones background music feature. The problem is as dbarnett states, the volume is pitifully low to callers placed on hold.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated!

I have two identical Panasonic systems, purchased about a year apart, and both have the same problem.
I suspected an impedence mis-match, also, so I rigged up a multi-tapped matching transformer I had from when I worked in the radio business and tried sources ranging from a paging amplifier to a headphone amplifier to a professional broadcast mixer, all with the same result. I had no probem with any music source working with an old Panasonic KX-TA1232. Does anyone know of a KX-TA624 on which the music on hold is loud enough and sounds good?
Thanks to all for your suggestions. I have that identical Sonorous unit on a 624 in a pharmacy and I used there stock cord and the volume was perfect out of the box

I don't think the problem (dbarnett's or mine) was with the Sonorous or any other source, but with the KX-TA624 istelf. As previously stated, the source (in my case anyway) is coming through loud and clear when background music is turned on at the phone. This eliminates source device, cables, adapter, impedence, etc., as the problem. The source can be heard ever so quietly when the caller is on hold. Of course, external source is turned on in programming.
From what I can tell, there are no programming functions or hardware controls (i.e., pot) that can pad or attenuate the volume in this KSU. How would you resolve this if you were confronted with the problem, replace the KSU?

if you take a basic 20$ cd/walkman with a mono to mono (non-attenuating)phono cable between the headset jack of the cd player and the moh jack of the 624 and it is still is no good, then it's has to be a faulty ksu. - replace it. if the moh sounds good, have the customer put a nice sounding music/cd in the 20$ cd player, put it on repeat mode and say problem solved.

Bud, it sounds like it's a bad KSU. I'm wondering if it can be repaired or if there is a specific board that can be replaced in the field. Perhaps someone else knows...
Regarding the source player, we have used countless el cheapo CD players that with 24/7 use, typically have a 3-4 month life span. We have recently started using iPod Shuffles mated with a USB wall wart, the idea being that given there are no moving parts, it should last forever (comparatively, at least).
