Reading the manuals is good. Thats how I learned. When I started I was partnered with a guy that was 1A2 crazy. He did not like TIE or Iwatsu or any Electronic Key System and firmly belived that 1A2 would return to take over the world again. Read the overview, then the Feature guide, this describes all the features, and give you an idea of what the system can do. Many people install systems for clients and have no clue as to what the system can do. Or just believe that no one needs all these features. The end use may have a need for these features. Finding an Application that a feature fulfills makes customers HAPPY. Then read the user manual, this describes how to use the features. You need this knowledge to set up the system and train users or to knowledgeable in general. The Installation Manual will usually have diagrams of a typical layout. Once you learn basic wiring skills you should be OK. To me, Tech Service is just to explain the Goofy parts of the manual or what they left out. Of course there is more to this business than that, but it will get you ready for basic key systems.

What all have said is indeed true, but 1st, I'd take note of what brand of systems exist in your area already. This would make for great repair or upgrade calls down the road.
For example, around here it is mostly Nortel with a small amount of Toshiba & Panasonic.
This is of course assuming that the area wasn't saturated by imported junk by some trunker & that no-one knows anything about.
