@ Kxtvet
I really don't need the sarcasm but the assistance that you have given is appreciated. I have read the manual already and well given I have been busy with other aspects of my job I will most likely contact a service company in my area.

@Rich
Thanks for the advice and help and although the issue if mostly resolved. The few questions and issues I still do have, will be directed toward the service company I call on Monday.

I wasn't trying to act like I know it all and I knew it wasn't going to be easy but I did need to try and finish this so I can keep my job. Thanks for the help. laugh

I am a summer intern at a family operated distribution business. I have basically had been jobs that dealt with sales, to computer repair, msds's, landscaping, and obviously this one. Its a learning experience but after talking to someone about the problem I did solve it yeah I didn't expect to fix this or anything like that but I'm just glad it's done. They make interns handle the service repairs and the dirty work but it's a nice job. Thank you for the help.

Panasonic made two phone systems from two different divisions of the company, the DBS and the KXT. Some phone system manufacturers made digital phones very easy and forgiving and others did not. The beauty of the first Merlin systems was that big plug. The customer couldn't fit the plug into a regular 6-pin phone jack and that made them think before they did something bad to their phone or system.

As technology progressed and compatibility was the key, we found that a digital phone could work on one pair. The DBS, and most systems use the same pair as an analog phone, and the KXT series used the second pair as the digital pair.
To compound the problem, the DBS is not very forgiving when you start plugging in analog phones and shorting the pairs...as simple as going off-hook on a single line set. It puts the line in a confused state and prevents the digital phone from working until you go into programming and reset the port. The DBS systems in early Wal-Mart stores were great for at least two or three service calls until everyone got the word.

A little common sense works in that we always try to tell the customer that just because the plug fits, doesn't mean it will work. Fortunately, we only have 3 or 4 DBS systems in our customer base. (My favorite is the amplifier trick where the automotive boys decide to just drop a speaker at the end of a constant voltage (25v) speaker line, but that's another thread.)

The learning curve on a DBS system isn't very steep, especially the 824. Card count is low, programming not too elaborate, and you already know about the SLT adapter. The distribution of the lines requires a bit more skill, in both wiring and tracing the cables, but you can learn that too.

It all depends on how much time you have to spend on the task.
