We have a KX-TA824 system, with a TVS50 voice mail unit. Everything is currently set up and running, and the AA (?) answers with the generic message. I need to record the custom prompts, but for the life of me, cannot figure out how to enter the main menu. I have a phone plugged into the 01 port.
Also, what is the different between custom prompts and the 1 through 100 custom service greetings.
I appreciate any help.

In a newer model TVS-50 there are 32 company greetings (numbered 1-32) and 100 custom service greeting slots. They are assigned by connecting to the serial port on the voice mail and defining them. In my TVS days, I used to make DAY 30 Night 60 and Holiday 40. That left spaces for sub-greetings as in we have a church that tells the caller to press "3" for mass times. That's stored as CS-33 and there is no "night mode" in the VM system.
Custom prompts come in 2 flavors, and it's seldom used, unless you Habla Expanol. Then, you could create custom 1 and custom 2 prompts for English and Spanish.
The greetings are recorded from mailbox 998, the message manager's mailbox.

Thanks for the ideas about custom greetings.
Regarding the message manager's mailbox, we dial "9" for an outside line, so how do you enter the 998 as an extension?

Simple. 107 or 115, then dial #6 *998 and the password. Please say you're using some sort of manual for this work.

Thanks. I tried both of those extensions, but don't seem to get anywhere. I realized after I named this thread that we have a TVA50, but I don't think it matters for this purpose. The only extension that I can dial that accesses the VM is 199 (or 198), and I get all the usual choices to customize the Message Manager's mailbox, but none of the options to start recording custom prompts for the system works. Oh, and yes, I have all the manuals that come with the equipment. I'm definitely missing some incredibly basic piece of info. I've gone over all the settings that we programmed from the computer, like allowing Message Manager Access from Telephone, and I have the phone plugged into Port 01. It's downright insulting to have the VM preprogrammed voice hang up on me! <smile>

Where did you pick 199 or 198 out of? The Voice Mail jacks plug into the 7&8th port or the 15&16th port of the TA-824. By default, they are extensions 107 or 115. In console program 1.3 if your extensions are renumbered, make sure that you reference port 7 or 15 as the pilot number. Then, turn it on in programming. When you have it properly programmed, the light will go solid on the VM system to tell you it's integrated. It's done by running a 4-pin cable from port 01 to the TA's 07 or 15 and port 02 to port 08 or 16.
If it doesn't, in the TA's maintenance console, go to 1.2 and make sure you set VM to APT integration and pick the ports you're going to use for VM-1, be they 07&08 or 15&16.
If you've turned on Message manager and System owner access from a phone, they HAVE to work. You can't delete MB 998 and 999 and if it's propwerly interfaced, #6 will give you a new prompt to let you dial * ext.

If you haven't pointed the Port/Trunk Service to the Custom Service Prompts you can record them all you want but they won't play until you program the Port/Trunk Service to use them.
Port/Trunk Service / Call Service / Day Mode / Incoming Call Service
And you have to program the Custom Service Menus as well.

Read the Manual. It's all in there.
"I'm definitely missing some incredibly basic piece of info."
Read manual. Not SKIM.
