I know you guys have seen or heard just about everything, I'm hoping you can help with this one......

A customer called me the other day saying that thier VM was not working properly. When you dialed into the VM system all you heard was 3 tones. I shut down the system, reseated the card, restarted the system. The VM came up and worked as it should.(This was yesterday). Today this same customer called and said that their VM was down again. This time when you dial 440 to open the mailbox, it says that it is dialing 150 and then you get nothing. When I dial in to 150, it rings once and then nothing for about 30 seconds and then it beeps once. Its like I'm dialing into the VM system but not getting any voice prompts .

Any ideas, or is this card dead???

Thanks for any help

I doubt that it is actually dead, but it probably wasn't installed properly originally. It needs to be initialized upon installation. If not, it basically ends up unstable from that point forward and extremely vulnerable to any kind of power fluctuation.

You should just bite the bullet and initialize it now, make sure that it is V20052 and you should be good from here on out.

By initialize do you mean card slot programming (flash 24)? If so that was completed, at least when I looked up in flash 24 buttom 8 (for card slot 7) it showed that a VM card is installed in that slot. I don't install a lot of these (and didn't do the orginal install on this one) so I have to read the book and refresh my memory each time.

Thanks for the help. I'll check back in an hour or so. Thanks again

No, you need to connect directly to the card with a laptop and select the main menu option for "initialization".

WAY too many pepole just plug them in, program them and run. Sure, they work fine for a while. Unfortunately, being flash-based memory, things can lurk around for a long time. Initialization MUST be done when these VM cards are installed.

Like I said, if you are going to maintain this system, cut your losses and initialize the card. You will be much better off than to be chasing gremlins forever (since you were the last one to touch it).

It's not too bad and all that is needed is a straight-through cable and a terminal program like Hyperterminal or Procomm. It is almost 100% menu-driven anyway, so don't fear.

Feel free to PM or e-mail me if you want direct support while you are on-site. I am in the office from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM EDT, so if you want to call me, just go to my Web link to get the number and ask for Ed.

ED,

Thanks for your help. I initialized the voice mail and it came right up. Just had to redo their open and closed schedule and put the nakes to the mailboxes. The greatings stayed in the system so they didn't have to redo those.

Thanks again for the help
