Has anyone had success with endpoint phones? I just installed an XTScIP phone system with an 8-port voip card. My customer wants three satelite home office locations. I purchased three 7024D voip phones. I have tried them on my home network and they seem to be flaky. I have checked my dsl modem and I am getting great speeds. The phones work right off the bat and then start to slow down in abilities. Then every two or three hours the phone drops off and has to be reset. I just don't think the customers is going to be real happy resetting the phone all the time and the response time is just wrong. I've checked latency and other stuff. i'm thinking I sold the customer a boat with a hole. Has anyone else had experience?
Thanks for any response.

I would do a logged ping test from router to router for say 24hrs and make sure the DSL isn't dropping.
We had an issue like this not so long ago but, on a different brand name system and it turned out to be the ISP modem was dropping packets.
Of course, I hope you know DSL isn't a perfect science for this application also.

I have four of these phones at my house. I also have one Nomad wireless IP phone. They are connected to the XTS at my office, 40 miles away. They work flawlessly.

I also have plenty of customers with similar setups, including systems that are networked using VOIP. The equipment works.

It sounds like the firmware on your VOIP card might not be up to date. I will admit that there was a problem with earlier versions. This is the only reason that I can imagine that you would have trouble with phones connected via your LAN. Are you using DHCP? Are the sets programmed to "local" if on your LAN or "remote" if not? There is a big difference there with regard to performance.

Some more food for thought: DSL doesn't afford you the syncronous up/download speed that can be attained using cable modem. The bandwidth required of these phones is minimal, but when all of the kids come home from school and start gaming on-line, the local DSL node gets bogged down.

We are using the better half of a T1 at the office (832K) for data. At home, we are using cable modem. We tried DSL when it became available, but it didn't cut it. We are too close to the fringes of coverage, so Verizon let us out of the contract for this reason. We had intermittent problems for years using cable modem service, similar to what you have described.

It wasn't until our cable company got bought out by Comcast that they had the money to replace a defective feeder. Since then, we haven't had a single problem.

My wife works from home using IP phones on our XTS and has done so for nearly three years. She hasn't come to the office one time in a year. I assure you that these phones work. There must be something wrong with your IP connection.

Thank you for your replies. I am ashamed to admit, but when I checked for problems with latency I only pinged once. I have since set up a continuous ping and find that I have a latency problem and it's pointing to the customer's site. They have a high speed dsl with three servers. Short of a private pipe is there anything I can suggest? We are talking latency anywhere from mid 150ms to 2900ms. After 7 PM it drops down to a respectable 70-80ms. Thanks again for any replies.

You could install a router with the proper QOS settings. Or, you could get a seperate DSL just for the phone system.

Thank you for your reply. I just checked and it is the customer's DSL. I will follow your advice and recommendations. Thank you. I have applications for voip from other customers and I am looking forward to providing that service. I am just jumpy I guess.

I will admit that I had a horrible time using a Linksys router, but when it failed, I replaced it with a D-Link #DIR625 unit. I haven't had a problem in three months.

No need to apologize for being "jumpy". VOIP can drive you nuts and it's usually due to the weakest link, like a router.
