Hi all,

I'm about to put my 12 monthly request to NEC in Ozz about having Dterms and analog fones supplied by them with RJ45s instead of the RJ11 they now get shipped with. 99% of all installations and upgrades we do here are structured cabling so having to sit down and replace the RJ11s with RJ45s in non productive.

Last time I asked this question here about 2 years ago you all seemed to be in favor of RJ11s but have things changed up there and has the market finally moved to structured cabling?? I haven't seen a new install here with RJ11 or the older BTs for years..

Problem that I see is that the majority of existing facilities do not have structured cabling.
Although less desirable, you can plug in a 6C6P to a 8C8P ( I'm a bit fearful using the common terms RJ11 and RJ45 although when we say that, everyone knows exactly what is meant)

Most of us ol'timers (like Bill) strive to be accurate and consistant:
  • Voice</font></font></font><ul type="square">
  • RJ-11 for single pair
  • RJ-14 for two pair
  • RJ-25 for three pair
  • RJ-61 for four pairs

And for the connection from the wall to the device

  • 6P2C
  • 6P4C
  • 6P6P
  • 8P8C

</ul><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">
  • Data:

    </font></font></font><ul type="square">
  • RJ45

And for connection from the wall to the device

  • 8C8P

</ul><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial"><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">
So basically, Voice is terminated on 66, 110, Bix, and Krone; while Data is terminated on a patch panel.

Where this doesn't work as well is VoIP, then Voice is considered Data.

Did someone say 'RJ45'? Please don't get me started on this subject. I'm begging you.

I do feel your pain though, and I respect the integrity of your question.

The problem is that two industries are being merged by people who don't have a clue what an 'RJ45' really is.

I can't go on any further on this subject for fear that my head may explode.

Key: RJ45 wiring patterns on jacks no longer exist and haven't existed since the 80s. T56A/B is a completely different animal.

Ok

The international community may not know that the Australian standard for telephone connections has now moved to RJ "45" style connectors (note the use of the word style). This move ignores the correct useage of the term RJ45, in fact I have never even seen an actual document that refers to the standard!

Simple fact is that a 6PXC (where X = No of connections) will fit in an 8PXC (again where X = number of connections) or RJ45 as it is commonly known. There is no reason why any of the major carriers should do any different than they do now!

That said, there is probably one out there (try whirlpool forums to see if anyone knows {a specifically OZ forum})

I've seen it ONCE. Ripped it out & redid the installation properly.

The vast majority of the "Telecom" (a.k.a.: Voice) world uses either 2 or 4 conductor mounting cords.

Suggest you learn to live with that simple fact at least for the immediate future.

Our company does structured cabling that complies to TIA/EIA Standards*. If you check out some of my posts under CABLING and "Pictures of Good Work" you will examples of how it should be done.

*99 percent of the time but sometimes you get a customer that just wants it cheap, but fortunately that's only 1 percent and we still do it right.

Seen hundreds if not thousands of structured cabling jobs! My previous answer is still valid! As are the other posters answers.

RJ45 is not a structured cabling standard, it is a Telecommunications standard that is seldom used these days. Problem is a lot of people use the wrong term and don't realise it. The plug as used in structured cabling is an 8p8c connector which is usually wired to either the T56A or T56B standard. It just so happens that the RJ (which stands for Registered Jack) 45 uses the same 8p8c plug! You may realise this if you do any work on the SV8300 as that uses RJ61 standards but again that is wired using an 8p8c plug!
