Has anyone had problems like this?

When we push out windows updates via wsus server, more than a few of our D820 and D620 laptops get svchost errors. The updates are not playing well with something in those laptops. This rarely happens with other machines, if ever. If the errors(svchost error, and the notify microsoft error) are left unclicked, the user can continue to work. If the user clicks ok or cancel, various features stop working, in the most extreme cases, nothing will open, and the user cannot work at all.

We have found some fixes, but there does not seem to be a permanent fix. Bosses are beginning to wonder what the hell is going on.

If anyone can shed any light on this, we would much appreciate it.

Thanks,

Also, The D820s, and D620s are dual core processors.

Perhaps the link below will help. If it happens every time you try to push out updates, I would suspect an issue with Windows installer.

I am looking into that, Thanks. That is the problem. I will try that fix, but I think one of our guys did it, and it seems to be only a temp fix. We need a permanent fix for this.

I had one this morning on a new HP desktop(Not an HP pc fan, by any means) that has a Pentium D processor. We only have about 6 of those desktops, where as we have 30 to 40 of the D820 and D620 Laptops with the Intel Core Duo processors. Point is: As far as we can tell, the problem exists only with dual core processors. I believe the D800 and D810 laptops have the centrino(not dual core) and Pentium M processors, and we are not having the problem with those(we have about 40 of those in use).

Thanks,

What is the specific error you are receiving from svchost? Is it an application failure that provides a hex error code? I think additional information is necessary to really solve the problem.

If it is happening only on specific Dell laptops (I'm assuming Dell by the models you mentioned above), then you might want to see what Dell supplied services are running on those when you see the problem.

svchose.exe Application Error

The instruction at "0x745f2780" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be read.

Click OK to terminate the program
Click CANCEL to debug the program

Also, when the above error comes up, there is a Microsoft message that wants to report.

"The Generic Host Process for Win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close."

Then it wants to report and gives the options send or don't send, just like all the normal microsoft reporting messages

almost 90% of our dual core processor pc's are dell laptops. just a couple HP desktops with dual core processors. Only 1 or 2 of the HPs have had the problem.

Note: We use Norton Ghost 2003 to image pc's for deployment, and have all the Microsoft Volume Licenses for them. We have rebuilt some of the images to eliminate that as the problem.

Seems like a known issue with Microsoft. See the support doc below...

Will try that.

My colleague was all over the microsoft site trying to find a solution. They must have just posted that.

I remember when the problem first occured last fall, microsoft didn't have anything on it.
