A far better upgrade and one that would make the expense and time worth the while would be Windows 7. I have used W7 extensively and I really like it and I never could stand Vista from day 1.

They invented something a bit later called Windows 7.
Unfortunately, and in what has become Microsoft fashion Vista was a test. Certainly you guys can remember Windows ME. A jacked up version of 98. ooooh look the icons look so much different and they totally blew up the networking and it's totally new. NO it was a transition. WIERD a year and a half later XP comes out, it's not 98 for sure...but it smacks of ME and win2k in that it's NT based. sweet an NT system. So five years later we'll try the game again. VISTA oooooh. A reskinned XP. economy must've been tough cause they actually tried to sell it. Hooked a bunch of peolple and OEM's on Vista, only to release 7 a year and a half down the line. Look it i dig 7, but understand you're paying for development. The wife's computer is Vista, another abandoned Microsoft OS (read WindowsME)
Try it...go to a store and say "Yeah I'd like to purchase a copy of Vista"
I could go on for days... but to PMCook's point, yeah grab a copy of Win7 pro, it's actually a solid ass OS finally.

Another way to do this is to make a dual-booting machine. Yet another way is to run XP as a virtual PC. Yet another suggestion is that you get a $200 netbook for working in the field. Netbooks all come with XP. You probably lost at least $200 by not getting that job. This is easier than lugging around a regular laptop anyway.
Some phone system admin programs just don't play with Vista, I understand.
I just tried a free partition resizer called Easeus. It worked great. If you are going to dual boot, Microsoft (and I) recommend that you install XP and Vista in different partitions. You add a line to your boot.ini file so you can choose whether to boot XP or Vista at boot-up time.
Microsoft has a free virtual PC program if you want to go that route.
Vaya con Dios amigos! Butch
