My old XP broke, and I replaced it with a Windows 7. Now, when I try to do remote programming via VMMI (Comdial), modem, the modems screech at eachother, but never connect. Using same settings as I did with XP, that worked fine. Anyone know how to make the modem work in Windows 7 for remote Comdial FXII programming? Aloha

Modems are a tricky item when switching from Xp to Win 7. Most new computers don't even have serial ports.
I guess the basics are the best place to start. Using a communications program (Putty, Hyperterminal, Procomm, etc.) connect to the modem and type AT&V. Look at the response and make sure the proper registers are at the correct settings. I am not at the office, but I seem to remember that VMMI had a specific set of register settings that should be set to the proper values for the modems to connect.
Double check your speed, bits, and handshake values (usually 2400 or 9600, 8 N 1). Comdial isn't real picky, but the speeds must match and no handshake usually works.
Finally, make sure that the modem you are using is properly installed in Win 7. A lot of the old drivers that were rock solid and worked well in XP fail in Win 7.
If you did have to upgrade to a USB modem, try and lower the speed or change the USB port. I see consistant failures with USB modems that are designed for USB 1 ports being used on USB 2 ports.
