I don't know what the rate is but you can test fiber with a flash light. It's time for me to get my light and start a new business in Utah. LOL

Ha-ha--
No Really, I am talking about DS1,DS3 OC-3 circuits and such..We used to maintain (x-connects,install equipment and such) a POP site here for a local CLEC and whenever we needed to test a DS3 or OC-3 circuit (across FIBER) we needed to get Williams, MCI or Qwest here and they would charge us up the wazoo. So if I wanted to sub out to one of them or anyone else....What would be a good rate? Any Ideas???

As far as testing those, 450-700 an hour depending on where you are located. I think test-ok was talking about in-house fiber, I see allot of people use a flash light to test, I have one that is made for testing fiber connections in-house.

When using flashlights to test fiber (I do it too) just be careful. Ordinary light is fine, but networks use laser light-Multimode fiber (you can tell MM because it has two cables-xmit and receive) is "ok", but some single mode (only one fiber cable) can cause loss of sight.
I try to use a fiber tester tool (uses a lens to disperse and show the received light) whenever possible.
Eyes careful.... (arrgh!)

Thats why I use a black piece of hard paper that came with the light. You are correct (never look at it directly)

If you don't want to go the expense of a tester, buy a couple of media convertors. Along with some connector changers and fiber patch cords, testing is a breeze. And you can always sell the media convertors!
