Our company is looking into getting a pri/T1 tester for our local/LD and MPLS circuits. Which tester do you guys recommend? I've used Sunset and a few others in the past but haven't really kept up with it in a while. Is there any that stand out?

I like Sunsets myself. I found them easier, cheaper and smaller than T-Birds.

Even though I also like Sunset's product line, I've used and would recommend the JDSU (Acterna) HST-3000 .

The T-BERD 2209 is a good test set for testing PRI. It's a small touchscreen unit that's super easy to run. The TPI-570 provides better decodes than the 2209.
I got to see the HST-3000 when I was deployed to Ft. Lauderdale back in November, and they look really sweet. Interchangeable modules for copper testing, DS-1, DS3.

Something to keep in mind: If you're searching around for an "occasional/on-hand" PRI tester, then the portable testers being discussed are great. However, if you intend the tester to be used for alot of "long-term, offpeak hours, overnight testing, etc, make sure that you don't purchase an enormous headache. (Example: Try using a portable tester with a display this small for say six to eight hours or so of continous circuit testing..)

I'm asked, on occasion, if I have such test equipment. My answer is no, but I do carry a couple varieties of loopback plugs and jacks! Even carry specially made "csu" by-pass tails for certain apps. There is no logic in having such equipment as the local telco is still going to install their own and do their own tests. I know this response does answer your question, but interconnects are not in LEC or CLEC business, unless you are!

That's actually a good point Jim. When I went on vendor meets we always used our own equipment and didn't rely on the vendor test. To tell the truth they usually weren't doing a valid test anyway.
To the question. Most of my experience was with T-berd, but they are way too expensive for the average Joe. You maybe able to lease the test sets that have been listed to see which one best fits your needs.

JustBill,
What you were stating is exactly why I am looking for a tester so when the LEC/CLEC says we tested clean to the CSU, and there are no alarms in the CSU history showing Intrucive testing, I can at least ask them to test with me instead of taking their word for it. Sorry to say but our provider is not the most honest when it comes to testing. Since I work for a company that needs an uptime of 99.99%, I would think a tester is a good investment. Thanks guys for all the recommendations.

TTT -
If price is an object we used to use a gadget called a t-taker (not t-talker)it did not come close to a sunset or t-bird but it did test the t's.
Sam
PS. I would still recommend the Sunset. Get the options you really need and not the others. It'll be cheaper and you can always add them later.
