I would also recommend the NEC DSX. Simple to learn/setup. Has every feature you would ever need, including VoIP phones and SIP trunking if you ever decide to go that path.

Im just going to chime in on NEC. Ive always been a fan of Nortel products but one of the sites i am a computer geek for has a NEC ipk, and although i hate the thing (dont know and dont care to learn the programming) its rock solid, the stations are well built and take abuse well, the building is often hit by lightning, and well its taken blows that would kill my favorite nortel product.

Let's see... that's 1 for IPO & 6 for DSX. I think that maybe the DSX record is skipping a little bit here too. Much of the decision will depend on the size of your shop and the applications you expect to run into. Just remember to sell your company. The DSX is a nice little system but it is available to everyone to sell so your margins will be harder to maintain. One of my DSX customers has already started buying all their new needs on-line which shuts me out for all but my install rates. Making money on just labor alone sucks.

Make it 2 for IP Office. It is now rock solid and will be here for a long long time. Learning takes time and is not for everyone. But if you are moving forward consider this.

Lots of smaller companies are moving to the dsx40 from the dx120. Its hard to justify the training costs to maybe sell 2 small systems a year.

If your yearly volume is minimal, you may be best served by selling what your local preferred distributor stocks. Having a local distributor who stocks a product is huge.

I would also look at what others are selling in your area. I would not want to be one of 15 selling a particular product, then it just becomes a price war. As Dave said, prevalence online also can majorly hurt margins.

I also can put a vote in for the IPO, and maybe take a look at the Vertical SBX. Both are solid small systems, IMHO

I see a lot of good points here. We're still looking for a hybrid, too---but we're just not sold on anything quite yet. It's a tough decision what with local AND online competition.

I can remember our taking on new systems in the last 20 years and how long it took us to make a profit---what with reading the docs, talking to tech support, finding out about little "surprises", and just not being super familiar with the products. After working with the ones we have -- they fit like an old shoe now, and we're just not wanting to start a whole new cycle of learning again.

We feel your pain.

Frodo, I need to understand your comments.

I just logged onto the NEC training / certification site, and started to look at the content. There is an exam at the end of the course, but I didn't see any mention of cost.

Can you explain what you mean? Thanks!
