I think you connect the two dsl ports together and then connect the computers/printers or router/hub to the lan ports of the modems.

But the modem set up is something I would not know how to do to get it to work without the old try and try again method.

They have to be pair gain SDSL modems and yes it works good. The longest I've seen is a company doing it roughly 2000 feet between two buildings. When I re-searched it years ago, I was told they are capable of going maximum 5 miles.

I do some wiring for an IT company that has had me cross connect a dry pair of wires for them at various sites. They do it when existing phone wiring is already there and it would be quite expensive to run any sort of network wiring. They have an abundance of old SDSL modems that were used years ago when high speed first started coming.

You can also extend the LAN using MM fiber and use simple converters on each end. I think the converters are like $90 a side.
