Hello guys, i recently did hard wiring & wireless internet for a motel & now the owner wants me to do changes to it so that anyone using the network is first taken to an authentication page & only when they agree to the terms on that page they are redirected to motels website & then they can surf normally.Any inputs how i can go about doing this

Build a server box with two network cards, install a proxy filtering on it and forward port 80 on card 1 through the filter, have the filter export on card 2. Linux works rather well with this. The key is to have the entire network hard-wire/wireless on card 1 and to have the external internet on card 2. Been there/done that.. Works well Please don't use windows!

ZoneCD will allow you to do that. Pretty simple to setup as well and can change the login page!

Topher's solution will work but if you've never done this kind of work and are not 100% comfortable with it then you and the client would be better off to work with a company that specializes in this. Here are a few links to help you get more information. www.alepo.com www.antamedia.com www.mycafecup.com www.cyberleader.net

I've used GoldenTree in the past. Made a real nice install but if the hotel is cheap they won't like the price. It used to run on Linux and used an integrated router with 2 bonded network adapters. They also use VLAN switches. It can be hard wired with Cat5E, use Access Points, or use a spare pair in a room for an SDSL modem. Just depends on the size of the building and what type of access you have to wiring or how good the wireless coverage is.

Cheap end user? This function can be done in several models of wireless router or access point that will run dd-wrt, e.g. WRT-54G (not all versions), Buffalo WHR-54, etc. dd-wrt includes chilispot and other functions used just for managing hotspot access. This is linux based software that replace the firmware in the router, makes it faster and smarter. Free and paid versions available, both are excellent. There's a learning curve, but it's worth it as a value add. https://www.dd-wrt.com
