My Sattelite provider (Dish Network) is now offering a slew of features (Video on Demand among others) that require a broadband connection.
I connected my HD receiver to my Verizon DSL modem (Westell Router)and the receiver connects to it but only gets an internal IP address (192.168.1.45) and can't connect to the internet. The address is consistent with my home network.
I called Dish, they said it must be a Verizon problem. Verizon says that if my PCs can connect it must be a Dish problem.
My guess is that my PCs have to use a PPPOE driver/DUN to access the internet and the Sattelite receiver does not have that capability built in. I asked Dish and got nowhere.
I have noticed however that some users who have the same router I do don't need to run that PPPOE driver. Is this the difference between Residential & Business DSL? Or something else?
Is there any way I can get around this issue? Anybody have any ideas?
TIA,
Sam

i know here with bell some DSL modems can be programmed with the username and password, that way any computer can be plugged into them, and the same modems will work with a PPOE access software installed on the machines if they are not pre set up (like mine) simpleest solution, get a router and put your info in its setup screens.

Check the properties of your PC's Internet connection to verify whether you use PPP or not. I would think that your router, not your DSL modem, would be the place to program PPPoE if it's even needed at all. Once that's in place, neither your PC nor your satellite dish would need to use that protocol to connect.
PPPoE is becoming increasingly popular out here in Verizon territory because of it's security.

I do use PPP - and I'm pretty sure that's the problem. The modem is a combination DSL Modem & Wireless Router and I don't know if I can program the protocol into it directly.

Hey Sam, if you'll post the exact model number of that unit, I'll be happy to dig for 'ya.
I'm using a Belkin F5D8230 (pre-N) router with a custom firmware load that lets me do all kinds of cool stuff. That firmware came from one of several "how to" networking sites that I've got bookmarked. I'm sure I can find something for your device there as well.

Thanks. I'll pull the model number tonight. It's been a pretty rough week. I know there's got to be a way to do this.

The recever should have a internal ip address, but it should also have a gateway for internet which is your routers ip address. if you are using dhcp on your internal router. it should set it up automaticly. if you have to set it up you nead to put in gateway address and you may also have to put in the dns server address.

Finally made it home. The unit is a Westell 327W. There doesn't seem to be anywhere in the menus to program anything.
OBT -
The receiver goes out and looks for an address - you can't program it - it just goes and gets it. It gets an internal address, but can't get through to get a DHCP address.
It always selects 192.168.1.45. I can ping the receiver, but can't get it to get past the router.

The router will probably nead a port opened for it to get out, look up what port it uses and check if the router is set up to let it through, could be blocked. This is found under applications and gaming or port settings in the router.

The PCs get out fine. I still think it's the PPOE protocol that's missing from the receiver. I tried nailing a static IP address to the receiver, but it didn't make a difference.
