Dave sent me an email this evening to let me know that he was off the hook for the moment.
I still can't quite figure out what the application is, but it's clear that a third-party installer is involved. Said installer reported that he "could get further than he did before [but still] did not have complete communications" and that "adjustments [from the company who sold HIM the equipment] are still necessary".
A6 brings up a great scenario involving RS-422, and I'll bet we could come up with another thousand possibilities. Luckily, the manufacturer seems to have taken an interest and plans to visit the site in two weeks or so.

Although you can run a cable longer over 100m and it may still work (PHY may be over-designed), but it is not guaranteed. I have had 170 m cable without any problems.
