I realize you want to make money but you do the customer no favors if they crash hard and you're scrambling for parts No question about it Skip .... you are dead on. If you are signing an agreement with them my guess is they will expect you to be able to get them up and running if they go down .... that is the whole point of having the agreement! As Hal said there is no way to profitably offer service contracts unless you have a bunch of them... AND .... you stock those parts.

So I am proposing a support only contract. No hardware. I can't see stocking what is really expensive equipment. Take 2 years to break even. I figure I can do 90% remotely so that should work.

A time and materials agreement? Most customers of any size would be leery of such contracts as they would fall in behind warranty and guaranteed maintenance contracts for response times in most cases.

Yeah, RBF, you're right, I know. I am thinking of more like a retainer deal. If I do 4 hours of remote support and burn through 1 hour of their support credits I am still doing OK so long as it does not come from a paying customer's time. It's a bid so I am not a shoe in for this. Probably won't get it.

You mention support credits. Are you offering a block of hours at a discounted rate? If so, it can remove the obligation of having to stock every possible part. It is only your service labor that you are obligated to.

If you are only able to offer support and they are looking for equipment coverage also I kinda think you should find out before wasting your time. -Hal

Please quote on Shortel system yearly hardware/software maintenance and support For example: "Support on Hardware/software, phones + helpdesk. Option gives access to software upgrades and up to 4 hours of labor to perform upgrade" Beleive this is what we currently have Shoregear 220T1A Shoregear 90V ShorPhone IP265 (5) ShorPhone IP230 (40) ShorPhone IP560 (1) Voicemail Server - Dell Power Edge R310 looks to me like they want both hardware and software

YEs, I have decided to not quote hardware. They did want it but they asked for a quote on just support. So I am proposing a block of time per month at 50% discount. I do have a backup for Shoretel should I not be able to immediately get to them. They charge a lot though. So month by month I could win or lose but at the end of the year I should come out ahead.
