I am not sure what you mean by a test. He sent me his login credentials and I setup one of the voicemails in my lab to use his ISP’s mail server. I think everyone is getting confused and it's not helping by posting things you do not know about.

If your ISP blocked port 25, you would not be able to send e-mail. Maybe they block port 25 for inbound traffic so you cannot run your own mail server, but that's not we were discussing here.

As far as the problem Ironhedz was having, he could not send out using the SMTP servers provided by his ISP. I looked up the necessary information for his ISP and they showed they used SSL for SMTP and he needed to send using port 465. As it turns out, the information I found was out dated and he needed to use port 25.

For those that have posted about opening ports and ports being blocked, that only applies to traffic that is coming into a server. The SVMi E-Mail Gateway uses SMTP to send the message.

Based on some of the replies here, I think many people have a misunderstanding how this works.

So... what is SMTP? Short for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, SMTP is a protocol for sending e-mail messages between servers. Most e-mail systems that send mail over the Internet use SMTP to send messages from one server to another.

The messages can then be retrieved with an e-mail client using either POP or IMAP. In addition, SMTP is generally used to send messages from a mail client to a mail server.

In our case, the SVMi is the mail client that is sending the message to the SMTP mail server.

Good Job Marc.

Is this a problem caused by Samsung not supporting SSL?

Hi Marc, port 25 blocking on outgoing SMTP connections is exactly what I was referring to, not by the router but by the ISP.

It is also something I actually do know a lot about, being very well versed in IT, and the IT manager for many of my customers when wearing my other hat. Maybe outbound blocking of port 25 for anything other than the ISP's SMTP servers is something less common outside of Australia? It's done down here to reduce spam supposedly.

Down here, every ISP that I am aware of only allow outgoing emails via port 25 through their own SMTP servers. So, if I have BigPond as an ISP, I have to set up the SVMi to use 61.9.189.249 (BigPonds mail server address) as the address for the outgoing mail, with no user name or passwords required. If I use anyone elses SMTP servers I can not use port 25 as it is blocked.

Thats what I meant when I asked if you were using AT&T as well for an ISP when you setup the Voicemail to use his ISP's SMTP log in credentials on port 25.

If I were to try it down here using his ISP's SMTP server and log in credentials on port 25 it would fail everytime, on every ISP I could try since I do not have access to an AT&T service.

I can use different ports, for example I can set up using googles gmail SMTP servers for the outbound SMTP server, since gmail uses port 587, or any other external private or public SMTP server that supports ports other than 25.

Hope that makes sense and clears up why I was asking the earlier question.

Cheers, Dave.

Okay... I apologize for the misunderstanding, there was another post above that mentioned opening ports in the router… so that's what I thought you were talking about.

In the states I can't think of any ISP that is blocking port 25 for outbound traffic. In the latest setup above, he was using AT&T for both an ISP and for the SMTP server.

You mentioned Google uses port 587... so am I safe to assume you have had luck sending through their SMTP servers? I have not tried because I haven't had the need, but I am sure there are others here who would find the information beneficial.

Hi Marc (and others...) I was using the gmail as an example, and in thinking about it, it would be a good idea. I jsut tried in the Dungeon (my work areas nickname) but I get back a response that the login is not supported, so I guess unfortunately it was a bad example to give!

A better example would have been using an externally hosted exchange server on port 465, I have done this before with no problems.

Cheers, Dave.

Hi

I have never been able to get Email Gateway working here on our 7100 I gave up in the end. So after reading the post I though Id have another play. And now it works!

We are sending to the public IP of our externally hosted exchange from a valid company email to another valid company email account.

I didn’t make any changes but log into the voicemail and change the port from 25 to 465 in both locations. This didn’t appear to work so I changed it back to port 25. Anyway a couple of minutes later I got the message sent on port 25 and 465. Could have been that one message sent on 465 prodded the mail server and now it accepts mail from that email address on port 25.

Strange as this mailbox had been attempting to send on port 25 once or twice a day for 6 months or longer and failed delivery.

The VG Key still flashes even if the message has been delivered via SMTP little strange...

I thought it was ok but upon further testing the EMG would only work correctly if called from the “office” extension. It seems to be something to do with how the system is presenting the email to the exchange server. And as you can see below I have somehow gotten it to trust messages from the office extension.

So how do we come up with an arrangement so that the exchange server will accept all emails form the EMG?

I have tried authentication in the past but this doesn’t seem to make any difference.

Jettech what firmware are you running on your OS7100?
you need to get hold of 4.30l, as I believe the ERROR - non_blocking_connect() failed is the error you get with sending email to a smtp server outsite of the local LAN with firmware below 4.30l on the MP10.
The MP10a didnt have this issue, or so im told.
