Today was the first day of my certifcation class on fiber optic's. I got to play with a fusion splicer, that thing was awesome.

Anyways, do any of you guys know of a decent "starter" fiber term kit at a fair price? I was shocked to find out the cleaver we used was a $1300 tool.

This is the kit I've used for years. You can get it for less at your favorite distributor.

We have been using the Corning Unicam system. It's a pretty inexpensive, although the connectors are more expensive than most others. It's also pretty goof-proof and there's no polishing required.

My Corning kit paid for itself along time ago. Keep only emergency spare connectors. Then order connectors when you need them. They tend to have a shelf life. If the connector has been "cammed" the least bit, its trash!

We also have used Siecor Unicam for years now. We used to use 3M Hot Melt a long time ago, which was OK, but you need power for the oven in inconvenient spaces. The other good thing about Siecor Unicam is that you can redo connectors without having a huge service loop, and redo them right there in the enclosure if need be. As Ed, says, the connectors are expensive though, especially single-mode.

Yup, unicam. I've used it for 8 years now and never had a problem with it.

Don't forget your crazy glue.

I agree the Siecor kit is the way to go. I used it for about 4 years at a company I used to work for. So much faster and easier than having to do epoxy/polish ends. Better for tight spots especially.

I'll chime in with the Corning Unicam suggestion.

It is the premier fiber connector in the industry for a reason.
