The trouble is Hal, some nitwit installed the hubs, routers, etc under someone's desk. He's BIG and don't like to be disturbed.Big in size or big in stature? Anyway, it sounds like you ought to toss this back to the CG who made the mess. Why should you suffer. I hate to even touch those things, usually just moving the cables knocks something out and now YOU are responsible and will have to fix it for nothing. -Hal

In a way it has been bounced back to the CG.
He had been there Thursday. Something about the kitchen computer could talk to the server, but the server couldn't talk to the room manager PC. When they test it, it kept coming up "defective device". He figured that it was the Cat 5e between the two. He got it to work by setting up a 9-pin cable between the two, which also meant that this temporary cable was going across the office floor.
I was called in to change the cable. I finally found the right cable and it tested 100 %. There was also a 2nd cable that some bozo (probably the CG) had reversed the 4th pair at one end. After fixing it, it was still the same, neither one would connect though. As far as I'm concerned, it's not the cables, but either the Lan card or a config problem...either case not my problem, so I told the hotel to bounce it back to him.
My question was more for the future as I know I'll need to do it again.

I have a "Real World Certifier" that works well. It can send trace tones on a line that is connected to a switch. A normal toner can't do that from my experience. https://www.bytebrothers.com/bb_tester/RWC1000.htm

https://www.flukenetworks.com/fnet/en-us/products/MicroScanner+2/Overview.htm We have about 5 of these little jewels and they come in very handy for what you are doing. This unit sends out a strong tone over all 4 pairs. It will also light up (off and on) the port, and has a OTDR feature for helping you find breaks and cable footage. It has a wiremap feature.

That looks like a very nice tester. How much do those run?

They run around $450.00. They are not a certifier but more of a trouble shooting tool. I feel really worth the money in terms of a troubleshooting tool. Ours have saved me that amount of money in labor cost alone.

Very much so.
I started with two of them and now have 5. I have yet to have one break and my guys are tough on things.
One thing that really helps us is the TDR feature. We also charge by the footage on cables (voice and data) and it makes it really nice to plug it in and get the footage.
I have been buying these through Accu-Tech. 1-800-432-0325. ext. 111 They have always come in low bid on these.
