This is in the terminal cans around one of our hospitals. It appears that the tie cable connects on the back side of this, and then I found that some new connections had been slid in between the "spring" wraps. Does anyone know anything about these? I've seen a number of old terminals, but this was the first time I had seen one of these. Sorry for the poor picture. I took it from my phone, which doesn't have very good resolution. Thanks! (It's just a guess, because I've heard of them but have never seen them...) I wonder if these could be spring-loaded heat coil protectors?

Those things are all over the place in DC. It's just an early quick-connect block (pre-66 blocks). The spring is made of somewhat square stock and by dragging a jumper into the coil, it cuts into the insulation and holds the wire in place. The house cable is wire wrapped to the terminals on the back side of the block.

The old spring terminals.. Wow! You didn't need a tool you just pushed the wires in. They had razor sharp edges that cut into the cross wire insulation.
What a mess.

They are all over Manhattan in old apartment houses. Like the men said, square stock, sharp, and no tools required.
Definitely NOT heat coils.
