The way I keep from loosing rod is to loop a bit of tape around the screw join and they wont twist apart while you are dragging them around. It isn't enough to cause a snag or peel off either.
I've found when they untwist partly that is the time they are most prone to breaking. If you keep a length of broken rod they are good for reaching with provided you keep the end you can put a hook on.
