Lightning likes to travel in a straight line and many times will blow through a 90 degree corner. Another thing I've done (old Telco) is take a piece of 26 gauge and wrap it around a screw driver a dozen times or so and put it between the two protection points. Same theory lightning will just blow it out. One thing about lightning, nothing is 100%.
