Good one, Larry. It was a deal the warden didn't want...some sales man sold corp HQ and it got dumped on the local warden as well as all other institutions.....so they didn't save a thing. The local warden told his boss to have it fixed by Monday or it would be in the parking lot....then he sent the goon squad into the comm room and had the contractor escorted out the front gate......

I think the decision will be based on the company's internal policies. There are way too many factors to determine the best cabling practices for this customer without speaking with their IT personnel about future plans of the organization. Many companies get by with a single Cat5e (mentioned above) for each users, sharing the cable for phone and computer. We recently installed a network for a high profile corporate headquarters in Dallas where they required their entire network to be 100% fiber optics. If you ask me, the endpoint technology is not ready; however the fiber optic cabling infrastructure is capable of handling much more traffic than Cat6 or Cat6a could dream of.

We do all the schools around here and we use cat 6 to patch panels and 25 pair to patch panels with one pair per. This has worked out good for the campus's that are now using VOIP phones. They will be moving in that direction over the next few years and wanted all their infrastructure to be ready.

It has worked out well in both the VOIP and Digital phones.

If using cat 5e to the wall jack, should put 8 pin jacks on each end. But then, how to connect the 4 pin plug on the end of a regular digital phone? Make a special adapter? Put 8 pin plug on the 2 conductor phone line cord? And the same issue at the patch panel end. ??

A regular phone cord will work just fine plugged in to a cat5e jack.

As long as it's plugged in carefully and there is no vibration. Might be ok at the wall jack end, but that sucker WILL create problems in the patch panel jack. Or should I say 'life' in the equipment room will cause problems in the patch panel jacks. Go with the 8P8P on one end and 6P4P on the other end of the cord. Besides, 'SPECIALS' have "SPECIAL" prices! smile
And SST, WATCH OUT FOR THE CAT5E/RJ45 COPS! smile

you can buy inserts that fill in the gap and change a 8p8c to a 6p6c they pop in and you can remove them if you ever need to use the jack as a 8P8C

quicker and cheaper then making up custom cords

the issue with using a 6p4c plug in a 8p8c outlet is when sideway pressure is exerted there is room for the plug to skew and bend pins or short out the connection

Yes, I understand the distortion caused by a 6p4c plug in a 8p8c jack. That's why I would look at the custom line cords/patch cords. But Skip's suggestion about inserts looks interesting. Any part numbers, brand, etc.?

Thanks.
