Years ago I put a PBX in for Marymount Manhattan College (A Tele Resources 32, if anybody even know what that is anymore!). The job was piped by the EC from the station to the IDFs or the MDF. This was a decision by the college and as an installer I would say it was one of the best installs I ever worked on.

I think all of would agree that there is nothing better, nothing more secure and nothing as future-proof as point-to-point conduit.

Is it overkill? Perhaps? Does it create a really excellent communications environment? I would say so.

As to why a particular jurisdiction, corporation or entity decides on this requirement - who knows? But IMHO it sure makes for a good installation.

Downtown Chicago? You will have to have IBEW do the wire pulling.

Concrete floors? If you need holes drilled, a permit must be pulled and worked completed by union drillers.

We did a job like that for University of Kentucky a couple of years ago. Sweat job, but they had a small fortune in it.

Yea Mike, a small fortune - spent once. They'll never have to spend a lot on recabling again.

Unless of course they redesign the office space......

One of the buildings I've done work for in was the same way...50 pair cable in EMT going from each room back to the phone closet on the flor. That cable is still installed, but many of the rooms they just opened up the pipe at the ceiling to run Cat 3/Cat5e since everyone has a phone room in their office now.
