Is there a problem with terminating cat5e cables on a cat6 patch panel?

The only problem that I can foresee is that someone down the line might see that the panel is indicated as Cat 6 and assume that the cables & jacks are as well. Maybe you should clearly label the panel as being Cat 5e wired & jacked.

Hardware can be backwards compatible. CAT6 cable uses 23 gauge copper while CAT 5E uses 24 gauge.

Thanks guys, I was more concerned about the difference in the gauge being an issue. We are terminating 100+ cat5e cables and our distributor sent us cat6 patch panels because they were out of stock on 5e.

Check with the manufacturer. I suspect that the slight difference in gauge will not be a problem, but it never hurts to get the info directly from the factory.

I wouldn't do it . Even if the Manufacturer gives you the OK what happens if the cables work loose and become problematic down the road .

I assume he gave you 6 for the 5e price I would just through them on the shelf until needed and get 5E elsewhere if needed

it would probably be ok but with a 100 drops I wouldnt risk it

I'd be worried that the 110 punchdowns are made for 23 gauge and thus a 24 gauge wire would be too small for them, and like Skip says, they would work loose.

Some of the AllenTel patch panels I have seen in their catalogs say they will work for anything from 22-26 ga and are rated for both Cat5e and Cat6.

The blocks and jacks for CAT6 would have no problem with the standard 24 gauge wiring of CAT3 and 5. Where you have problems with any punch on termination is when you punch down a larger gauge than remove it and terminate a smaller gauge. That's always been a problem from day one with punch on terminations.

I wouldn't necessarily agree Bill and with 100 drops I wouldn't chance it
