Our office phones have been acting up the past few days. When you pick up the phone there is a dial tone, but as soon as you hit 9 to dial out, there is a low buzzing sound and no dial tone. This has been happening to several staff members. The first time this happened I unplugged the phone from the wall and that fixed the problem. Now that solution is no longer working and I need to make outgoing calls! Help please!!! I am new to this job and soooo not a technology person, but it's my responsibility to get the phones working again.

I really doubt that the problem is with your system, rather the last line connected to it has failed. When dialing 9, the system connects you to the last line first.
Since this appears to be somewhat inconsistent, the problem may actually be with your second-to-last line.
Unplugging the phone and plugging it back in was likely just a coincidence.
You'll need to get a listing of all of your phone numbers and dial each of them one at a time. When you dial the one that is at fault, it will likely have this noise on it when answered, or it will roll over to the next one. Once you have identified the number of the faulty line, report this noise to the provider of your phone lines for resolution. In most cases, they will run an automated test to determine where the fault lies.

Thanks for your response! I tried making an outgoing call from each of the lines (1 through 8) and it seems that none of them are working. I would need to get the list of our phone numbers from our accountant who is out sick today...

The phone vendor came in today to look and apparently the problem was caused by the phone line outside of our office being wet from the recent rain. It's being taken care of now. Thank you again for your help!
