Hello, I have a two bell ringer that I believe has a bad coil. I can find no markings on the ringer that identify its manufacturer. I am quite sure the coil is bad as there is no continuity (infinity) across the slate / slate red. My question is where do I go to buy a replacement coil? I can take a picture of the unit if it would help.

Thanks,
Neil

Let's see, Phonecoinc.com comes to mind. Try googling 'telephone parts'. And I'm going to say right here, unless it's a VERY collectible set of bells, you'll be able to buy the bells with coil, for the same price as the coil. See if you can find any numbers on the bell assy or coil. John C.

OOPs have to check my specs if I can find them, since I don't quite remember; but I think there is'nt any continuity between the sl & sl-red.
it probably is red in sl-rd out black in sl out. ( I hope thats right).

thats true if you want to check red to sl-rd should be 2500 ohms and black to sl should be 1000 ohms. Whats an ohm? an english man 'ouse.

If the ringer has four wires, there should be a red, slate, slate/red and black wire.

Red and black go to the line wires, and the sl/red and slate go to the capacitor (half a microfarad) in the telephone's network, generally the terminals marked A and K. The coils are in series with the capacitor and the line wires.

Red and Slate/Red are the two ends of the 2650-ohm coil. Black and Slate are the two ends of the 1000-ohm coil. There should be no continuity bewteen the Slate and Slate/Red wires.

In the photo below, you can see all four leads at the right side of the terminal strip on the network. Starting at the top, there is the SL/R lead, the SL lead, the BK lead (on the tip side of the incoming line) then the yellow line cord lead on terminal G with no connection, and the R lead (on the ring side of the line.)

Does the ringer look like this? This is a photo of a Kellogg clone of a Western Electric 500 set.

I was wondering the same thing. I never saw a picture either.

To follow up, I sent him a replacement coil and haven't heard anything back, so I assume everything worked out.

I apologize for not responding sooner. I am involved in way too many things. Many thanks to Ed! I received the coil, installed it and once I figured out that the mounting hole in the bell are not in the center of the bell I adjusted the bells and all is well.

Thanks agian for the help and the prompt shipment.

Hello again,

Well, my ringer lasted about a month and now is not working again. I checked the coil and I have 850 ohms between the black and slate and about 2,100 ohms between the red and slate/red. So, I believe the coil is OK. However, I get no "kick" on my analog ohm meter X1 scale when testing the capacitor. So...I think the capacitor has failed.

Is this a readily available item?

Thanks again,
Neil

.47 UF @ 250 Volts or more will do the trick. NOT polarized/electrolytic, that WON'T do the trick. John C.
