In telecommunication, signal processing, and thermodynamics, companding (occasionally called compansion) is a method of reducing the effects of a channel with limited dynamic range. It is a combination of compressing and expanding (the word companding therefore is a portmanteau word), and is a variant of audio level compression.

We have a plant in Reynosa, Mexico. We have a Definity switch in our McAllen, Texas plant and then pipe the calls across a microwave system. AT&T is in Mexico but trying to get service for a downed line is like pulling teeth. We keep two international voice and one international fax line available to use if Reynosa has one of there continual power outage issues. It helps to have the switch on the U.S. side.

Power was on and off and on and off in Cabo during an install last year. It seemed to be a commom happening. Next time a generator will go along with the equipment just for the installation.

if you are running a t1 don't fprget to put the smart jack on the generator (if it is not line powered) as well. had a customer today argue for about an hour that their ckt could not be down because of a power failure he had his pbx on a generator....but not his smart jack, it was not line powered, ckts went down hard
