Does a modem work thru Vonage? I have a side business of remote support and need to know if Vondage is an option? I have Roadrunner at home but really didnt want to give them more of my business... has anyone had any issues with vonage and modem connections to their PBX systems?

We have Vonage here in Canada as well. I seem to have to play with the modem configuration for the security panels to make them work right. I have never had one not work, but sometimes it takes programming in a pause before dialing, sometimes a "search for dial-tone," and other times turning the search for dial-tone off and have it force dial.

Here in the US, VOIP and security alarm panels is a recipe for disaster. One major problem is that the number of A/D and D/A conversions that take place distort the tones and make the reception totally unreliable. If you do use it that way, i hope your liability insurance is paid up to the max. Copper or Glass for reliable dial tone on security systems.

The installer and monitoring station isn't liable for that. Never monitor a system without the signed contact that specifies that in the fine print! It's no different than an outside contractor cutting the line.

Not to get off topic, a modem should work through Vonage. If it's a tone problem, slow the transmission speed down.

I was looking more for anyone that may have used vonage to use as a dial in for remote support for adds, moves and changes.. Not all of my customers will let me have access to their network thru vpn.

considering their performance, the issues they have with the recent IPO and the latest lawauit they lost to Verizon, I wouldn't count on them being around for long.

I dont think they are going any where. The service they offer has a large following and the Verizon award will be appealed and will be in the courts for a long time. Verizon has its own issues with a Fax over their IP solution also.

You just can't convert all that squeeling to a bunch of packets laugh

I use a dial-up modem to call into my security panels for programming on Vonage and it seems to work okay.

The modem speed is always 1200 baud or less though (security panels are slow!).

I have used at&t voip as well as vonage for remote programming and found that if I place a caller id box (standard walmart issue) between my pc and vonage, I can keep the connection alive long enough to finsh programming probably 90% of the time even with a higher baud..Don't know what makes it work but it does seem to help.

You guys seemed to have answered my question. I don't think I will go with that. I don't think the Digital Phone Service from Time Warner will be any better since they are using the same type of equipment to give service. I guess it will be stupid AT&T once again.

I use them for my modem/fax and separate voice line at home. Haven't had any problems.
