Most of the time when you dial 7 digits the switch automatically will insert your local area code for routing.. So basically you are sending 10 digits.. PBX's will typically add the area code before sending out over their PRI... The "1" is old school to signify to the switch that it was a long distance call. Now everything is just routed using the 10 digits so either you punch them all in or the switch adds it for you.

Say what? I don't think so. What about key and hybrid systems, or are they now considered to be PBXs? The CG's have redefined nearly every other industry-standard term or acronym, so I assume that when you use the acronym "PBX", you are referring to all phone systems using PRI circuits. Nothing could be further from the truth.

End offices always require a "1" to be dialed to route the caller to a toll switch and will likely never change since there is a cost associated with these types of calls.
