The couple of times I was in my local Fairpoint (formerly Verizon, Nynex, New England Tel, etc) Central Office, I think they used an AT&T 5ESS, judging by those pictures linked in the OP. Not 100% sure though. Cool stuff though.

New England Telephone installed both 5E's and DMS-100's throughout the state of Maine.
For instance, in Portland, the DS0 is a 5E, but the 03T is a DMS-100.
